SA, North Korea strengthen ties

first_img18 March 2005Deputy President Jacob Zuma says South Africa’s move to strengthen ties with North Korea should not be misinterpreted.North Korean Vice President Yang Hyong Sop arrived in the country on Wednesday for a five-day official state visit – the highest-level visit by anyone from his country to date.Yang and Zuma are expected to sign an agreement paving the way for regular diplomatic consultation between the two countries.Speaking at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday, Zuma said that South Africa had ties with many countries with a nuclear capacity, adding that SA and North Korea would continue to explore ways of harnessing nuclear technology for sustainable use, not for destructive purposes.“Nuclear capacity should be used for the betterment of communities”, Zuma said. The North Korean delegation, which includes Choe Su Hon, the deputy foreign minister, and Hong Chang, the director-general of the ministry of trade, briefed Zuma on the status of the six-nation talks on that country’s nuclear disarmament.North Korea has boycotted the talks with South Korea, Japan, China, Russia and the US since 2003, and in February 2004 made an unconfirmed declaration that it possessed nuclear weapons.Yang blamed the stalemate on the United States’ “hostile policy” towards his country, demanding an apology from US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who recently labelled North Korea an “outpost of tyranny”.He said that his country was prepared to participate in the talks if “appropriate conditions” were put in place. “In short, the ball is in the US court”, he said.Yang acknowledged the peacekeeping role South Africa was playing in Africa, saying this had raised South Africa’s prestige internationally.Zuma said he would honour an invitation to visit North Korea as soon as he was able to.South Africa dismantled the apartheid state’s secretly built nuclear arsenal in the early 1990s – becoming the first and so far the only country to construct nuclear weapons and subsequently voluntarily abandon its weapons programme – and since then has been active in promoting nuclear non-proliferation reporterlast_img read more

Pick n Pay opens first store in Mauritius

first_img3 October 2011 Pick n Pay group enterprises head Dallas Langman said the first store is approximately 4 000 square metres in area and will offer over 16 000 different products, including clothing. Supporting local suppliers “We plan to open stores in Malawi and Angola in the future,” Langman said. “We are set to continue along this expansion path in a planned and deliberate way.” Pick n Pay’s expansion into Mauritius follows its first store opening in Mozambique in June and its second store opening in Zambia in March. Last year, the retailer also announced the purchase of a further 24% of Zimbabwean operation TM Supermarkets, increasing its shareholding to 49%. Pick n Pay’s entry into Africa has mainly been through partnering with locals and via the franchise route, where local experts own the franchise in their own communities. “Based on our comprehensive research and assessment, Mauritius has one of the most successful and competitive economies in Africa, providing further impetus for our investment into the country,” Langman said in a statement this week. “The Mauritian stores will be run by franchisees and will be a significant drawcard through its offering of an appealing array of products to Mauritian residents and tourists,” Langman said.center_img Langman said that one of the main benefits to the local economy would be through employment, and that the first store would employ approximately 100 local residents. This figure would increase as the company opened more stores in the country. “Finding local suppliers and entrepreneurs requires determination and effort but it is integral to our model,” he said. “It is our intention to ensure that local farmers and suppliers are supported as much as possible in order to stimulate further economic growth in Mauritius.” However, there are instances, such as with stores in Zambia, where the company will develop corporate-owned stores. He added that the group aimed to support local suppliers as much as possible. South African retailer Pick n Pay has opened its first store in Mauritius, at the Bagatelle Mall outside the capital, Port Louis, and is to open a second store on the island nation next year, as part of its African expansion strategy. Analyst warns BC gas prices could soon hit a record high

first_imgVANCOUVER, B.C. — Drivers in B.C. should brace for record high gasoline prices this summer and the financial pain has the potential to spread across the country, says a petroleum industry analyst.Dan McTeague of the online tech company GasBuddy predicts that beginning in April and continuing to September, gasoline prices across much of B.C.’s south coast will hover around $1.60 a litre. He blames the hike on high demand and chronically short supply, made even worse by Friday’s announcement that the Olympic pipeline that distributes gasoline throughout Washington and Oregon will be taken off-line for four or five days of maintenance. Prices across Vancouver hit about $1.55 over the weekend, while Victoria remained around $1.40, but McTeague warns southern Vancouver Island could see an eight-cent-a-litre leap as the ripple from short supplies and climbing local taxes spreads. The high for a litre of gasoline in Metro Vancouver was set on June 22, 2014, when the price was just under $1.56.McTeague said some analysts fear higher prices will spread east.“People are shaking their heads,” he said. “It’s become quite the story, with some national overtones.”McTeague said other parts of the country are not looking at the same prices for gas, particularly because of B.C.’s taxes on gas.“It’s not quite the same thing, you are not dealing with 50-cent-a-litre taxes and you are not dealing with a shortage in the same way Vancouver is experiencing,” he said. “But it does suggest, I think, the likelihood of breaking the all-time record in Vancouver will likely happen this week.” In other parts of the country on Monday, the average price for gas was just under $1.14 a litre in Edmonton, about $1.25 in Toronto and around $1.12 in Halifax.Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline supplies about 50 per cent of the gasoline for B.C.’s south coast, but McTeague says it is already congested and can’t meet the region’s demand. The expected lengthy maintenance shutdown of the Parkland refinery, which McTeague said carries 25 per cent of the Vancouver-area’s gasoline, has further crimped supply, while the low dollar adds to the expense of topping up from Washington state refineries.“By any stretch or by any measure, the price you are paying in Vancouver is, for most people, prohibitive,” said McTeague.center_img Los Angeles is the other city in North America where gas prices are unusually high, selling at $3.50 a gallon. But McTeague said even when the exchange rate and other factors are calculated, B.C. drivers would pay about $5.00 for a gallon.last_img read more
