Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman: Betting odds, expert pick, how to bet on the fight

first_imgManny Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs) and Keith Thurman (29-0, one no-contest, 22 KOs) will clash on Saturday night for Thurman’s WBA (super) welterweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. And when two highly-regarded gladiators prepare for combat in a fight like this, there are bets to be made. So, let’s take a closer look at Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman. Join DAZN and watch more than 100 fight nights a yearManny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman odds, expert pickOnline sportsbook has named Pacquiao a slight favorite (as of July 16). The logical theory is oddsmakers regard Pacquiao as the slightly better fighter of the two and that Thurman needs to prove he’s entirely back from a litany of injuries after only competing once since March 2017.Pacquiao comes in at -125, which means you’d need to wager $125 to win $100. Meanwhile, Thurman is a plus +125, meaning if you bet $100, you’d net $125. Boxing’s only eight-division world champion returns for the second time in 2019. He fought in January and dominated Adrien Broner to win by a lopsided decision. The senator from the Philippines showed up to the Errol Spence Jr.-Mikey Garcia fight in March with many thinking he was going to challenge the winner. After Spence won, Pacquiao stepped inside the ring at the request of Spence, who was pushing for the fight. However, Pacquiao shifted course and decided to take on Thurman, instead.Thurman made a triumphant return to the ring a week after Pacquiao beat Broner and defeated a game Josesito Lopez by majority decision. There are three prop bets to watch out for with Pacquiao vs. Thurman: The fight not going the distance and Pacquiao and Thurman winning by decision. Current odds have the fight-ending inside 12 rounds at +225 and rising. Pacquiao is at +140 to win a decision with the odds going down slightly. Thurman is at +188 to win if it goes to the scorecards. Put some money on this at William Hill before it’s too late and the odds start to lower. To place a wager at William Hill, all you need to do is register on the homepage. Once you register, they will send you an email confirmation and you will be able to log in and get started. In the lead up to Saturday’s showdown, both Pacquiao and Thurman have said they can finish the other. But their recent history suggests not to expect it to occur. Pacquiao only has one stoppage win in his last 11 victories and that was a seventh-round TKO win over Lucas Matthysse last July. Before then, it was November 2009 — in perhaps the Flipino icon’s best performance — when he destroyed Miguel Cotto.Thurman hasn’t put anyone away since he defeated Luis Collazo in their July 2015 contest. Prior to that, “One Time” had 11 of his 14 victories coming via stoppage. For Pacquiao, a win over Thurman would mean a couple of things. One, it would show that even at 40-years-old, Pacquiao is still one of the best 147-pound fighters in the world in a sport deemed a young man’s game. Secondly, a win would keep his hopes alive of luring Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement to avenge his May 2015 loss, which Pacquiao blamed on an injured shoulder. If Mayweather stays retired, then a unification bout against the winner of Spence (IBF champion) vs. Shawn Porter (WBC titlist) or a crack at WBO titleholder Terence Crawford later in 2019 or early 2020 could be on the table. For Thurman, defeating Pacquiao would put him back in the position and spot the 30-year-old felt he never lost, as quite arguably the best welterweight in the world. It would also give him the career-defining win he’s been looking for. Doubt has crept into people’s minds because of how he looked against Lopez and his failure to put him away, but that was coming off a 22-month layoff due to an elbow surgery and hand injury. Thurman has repeatedly called 2019 his “comeback year.” The saying doesn’t mean anything if he can’t beat Pacquiao. To do so, Thurman needs to fight like he did when he beat Danny Garcia in his last bout before the layoff. He has to keep the fight at a distance, use his footwork, throw power shots and keep his foot on the gas pedal. Thurman put on the brakes during the second half of the Garcia bout and it nearly cost him. Pacquiao’s not going to give him Thurman a break. He will use his footwork to throw punches from all kinds of unique angles that Thurman has never seen before. It’s imperative that Pacquiao gets off to a quick start. He can’t let Thurman dictate the pace because then he’d have to fight from underneath at 40-years-old. It’s hard to imagine Pacquiao not coming out the aggressor due to the comments Thurman made heading into Saturday night. Plus, Pacquiao has continuously been in marquee fights and knows not to let the moment get to him, while Thurman has never been in anything close to this magnitude. SN Pick: Manny Pacquiao. The boxing legend is going to notch his second win since he turned 40 in December and move on to another blockbuster bout, handing Thurman his first pro loss.Best Wager: Pacquiao winning a decision; William Hill (+140)last_img read more

Nelson U14 Selects claim silver in Sandpoint

first_img“The boys played very strong in that game, dominating the play and the ball, and generating at least a dozen good scoring chances to effectively none for the other team,” said Dyck.  Unfortunately, the team was snakebitten around goal that game, and failed to find the net, leaving the scored tied 0-0 at the end of the game, leading to shoot-outs. Fortunately, they came through in the shoot-out, with Jesse Thurston, Ezra Foy, Josh Yasek and Grayson Hill netting for Nelson, and keeper Bradey Sookero coming up with a couple big saves. This got the team through to the gold medal final, and a rematch with the Spokane Breakers, as they had won the other semi-final. “This didn’t surprise me,” said coach Hill, “I thought they were definitely the strongest of any other team we saw at the tournament.” It was an exciting, tight, hard fought game, which, unfortunately Spokane won, with a late goal, seven minutes from full time. “We suffered a few injuries through the course of the weekend, losing a number of players, and at one point in the final, we had six injured players and only one sub available,” said Dyck. “That took its toll, and by the second half of the final, you could just see our boys start to run out of gas. They played their hearts out though, and Lyle and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”  The coaches singled out the play of the midfield  of Ezra Foy, Grayson Hill and Jaden Dyck.“ They’ve lead our team all year, and it was the same this weekend, also, as those three were superb, and allowed us to control the games a majority of the time.” Silver was the colour of the day for the Nelson Selects U14 Boys at the Pend Oreille Cup soccer tournament in Sandpoint Idaho this past weekend.“It was a great weekend for the boys, and they played really well throughout the tournament,” said coach Lyle Hill. “This is especially considering it falls right at the end of summer, when the team hasn’t really played for two months and can be a bit rusty.  In past years we’ve had some struggles at this event for this reason.  But this year, the boys were ready.”  The Nelson squad won both of its round robin games, 3-0 against the Coeur d’Alene Sting and 1-0 against the Spokane Breakers, to win their group and earn entry to the semi-finals.  Bradey Sookero and Blake Markin Hellekson split the goaltending duties and earned the goose eggs for both games. “As usual, our defense was strong, lead by Jesse Thurston, Jahmal Truth-Verville, Luka Eyre, Jacob Erickson and Aidan Mushumanski,” said coach Kerry Dyck.  “Combined with solid goaltending, this has been a strength of ours all year.” Goals in the games were scored by Ernesto Archambault, Milo Baranyai Sheppard and Angus Patterson (with two).  In the semi-final, the team was pitted against another Spokane team. last_img read more

SA police applauded for drop in crime

first_img21 September 2012 South Africa’s police have been commended for their intelligence gathering and partnerships with business and society, which contributed to the decrease in crimes such as car hijackings and bank robberies in 2011/12. Speaking to SAnews following the release of the national crime statistics on Thursday, Dr Hamadziripi Tamukamoyo, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, noted the decline in crimes such as car hijackings, bank robberies, ATM bombings and cash-in-transit heists. Dealing with crimes like these required intelligence gathering and sharing of information between stakeholders, Tamukamoyo said. “In that regard we can commend the police.”Business robberies ‘worrying’ Tamukamoyo pointed out, however, that the rise in business robberies, by 7.5%, was worrying. He said small businesses were a major source of employment for the poor. However, some could not afford the necessary security to protect themselves and would find it hard to grow if they became the targets of robbers. He added that while it was good that there was a new strategy to deal with business robberies, the success of the strategy would rely on its implementation. Earlier, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced that a strategy was being finalised to combat robberies at small businesses. He said there would be engagement, through the civilian secretariat of police, with the relevant parties to ensure the implementation of the strategy soon. Tamukamoyo said he hoped that in future the country’s crime statistics would be more detailed and released on a more regular basis.Call to fight ‘scourge of drugs’ Meanwhile, Crime Line has welcomed the drop in certain categories of crime, but said that the rise in drug-related crimes, by 15.6%, was a big concern. “The latest statistics echo our call for a renewed and multi-partner effort to fight the scourge of drugs in communities,” said Crime Line co-ordinator Marisa Oosthuizen. “Crime Line is currently working on a large-scale campaign to bring the relevant stakeholders together to actively fight the scourge.” Plenty of work still to be done: Mthethwa Police Minister Mthethwa called on Thursday for more action and less talk in the fight against crime. Although the national crime statistics for 2011/12 showed a decrease in most crime categories, Mthethwa said there were still areas of concern and more hard work to be done. “There will always be disappointment in the fight against crime as long as you have crime in the country, as long as from a perception point of view people don’t feel safe. “This is a road that is always under construction,” Mthethwa said. “There will never be a situation … where we will say we have arrived in terms on fighting crime, so it’s an ongoing struggle.” But progress had been made, the minister said. This was evident in the decline in murder, contact crimes, organised crime, ATM bombing and other categories of crime. “We are not there yet, but with the participation of all sectors, we are turning the tide against crime. We must win the battle against crime, in whatever form it manifests itself.” The minister said he wanted more success, particularly with sexual offences and rapes, which were worryingly high despite a 3.7% and 1.9% decrease respectively. These crimes affected the most vulnerable – women and children – and more effort needed to be made to stamp them out, he said. Source: read more

International tourist arrivals in South Africa approach 10-million mark

first_imgForeign arrivals in South Africa reached their highest level ever in 2013 as the country’s international tourist numbers approached the 10-million mark, the Department of Tourism announced last week.(Image: South African Tourism)Brand South Africa reporterAccording to the latest figures from Statistics SA, 14 860 216 foreign visitors arrived in South Africa last year, a 10.5% increase over 2012. Of these, 9.6-million were tourists, translating to a 4.7% year-on-year increase in international (including the rest of Africa) tourist arrivals, and a 7.1% increase in overseas (excluding Africa) tourist arrivals.South Africa’s international tourist arrivals grew at an annual average growth rate of 7.4% between 2011 and 2013, well above the global average of 4.5% during this period, the department said.“Overall, South Africa recorded 428 596 more tourists in 2013 than we did in 2012,” outgoing Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said in a statement.“Following excellent growth in 2012, when tourist arrivals to South Africa grew by 10.2%, which was more than two-and-a-half times the global average, we are pleased to report that tourist arrival numbers to South Africa grew by a further 4.7% in 2013,” Van Schalkwyk said.“South Africa’s tourism industry continues to show good growth, and we remain confident in the ongoing performance and sustainability of the sector.”Positive growth from all regionsTourist arrivals to South Africa showed positive growth from all regions in 2013, the department said, including good growth out of Europe, its largest overseas market for tourists.European tourist arrivals increased by 7% year-on-year to 1 494 978 in 2013, with double-digit growth from Germany (14.2%), France (10.3%) and Italy (10.6%).A total of 304 090 German tourists visited South Africa in 2013, firmly entrenching its status as South Africa’s third-largest tourist source market. Arrivals from France, South Africa’s fifth-biggest overseas source market, grew to 134 840, while Italian arrivals reached 67 790.However, South Africa’s largest overseas source market, the UK, grew by a modest 1% to 442 523 tourist arrivals in 2013.Air arrivals from Africa on the increaseArrivals from the rest of Africa grew by 4% year-on-year to 6 889 389 in 2013, with arrivals by air growing by 12%.“Travel is becoming ever more accessible for Africa’s rapidly growing middle class, and we are certainly seeing this reflected in the growing number of African air arrivals to South Africa,” Van Schalkwyk said.Nigeria, the largest African air market for South Africa’s tourist arrivals, grew by 15.4% to 84 589 arrivals.“We expect our first fully fledged South African Tourism office on the continent, which we opened in Lagos at the beginning of this year, to result in continued growth in arrivals from this market of growing importance, and from the west African region as a whole,” Van Schalkwyk said.A total of 417 582 North American arrivals were recorded in 2013, up from 393 446 in 2012, while tourists accounted for 348 646 arrivals in 2013, reflecting 6.7% growth on the 326 643 tourists that visited the country in 2012.“The US market remains a major focus of our global marketing efforts and we are heartened by the continued good growth we have seen out of this market in recent years,” Van Schalkwyk said.Asia, Central and South AmericaAsia and Central and South America continued to record good growth on top of the exceptional levels witnessed in 2012, in which these markets grew by 34% and 37% respectively.A total of 435 076 Asian tourist arrivals were recorded in 2013, a 9.2% increase on the 2012 numbers. At the same time, tourism contributed approximately 617 287 direct jobs in 2012, amounting to about 4.6% of direct employment in the country, up from over 591 785 direct jobs in 2011.Van Schalkwyk said ongoing growth in all the markets in which South Africa actively markets itself was proof that the country’s marketing strategy was delivering the desired results.“The reality is that each year our invitation to come and visit South Africa, land of incredible wildlife, diverse experiences and most notably, warm and welcoming people, is being accepted by an ever growing number of people from around the world.“Two decades into our democracy, I am proud of what this industry has achieved and confident of its ongoing ability to contribute to the growth and development of South Africa.”In President Jacob Zuma’s new Cabinet, announced on Sunday, Derek Hanekom replaced Van Schalkwyk as minister of tourism. Hanekom was sworn in as the new minister on Monday.Source: Statistics South Africa, South African Tourism, Brand South AfricaWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? ECM: Surge of online content eludes management

first_imgCompanies with Content Management Systems are happy with them.  Enterprise Management Associates‘s (EMA) January 2007 enterprise content management report found that, when an ECM system was in place, 80 percent surveyed rated their Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solutions as being effective with at worst having a “neutral cost benefit”.But the report also found that 82 percent of the small and medium enterprises that they surveyed had no formal system in place at all and still continue to rely heavily, if not exclusively, on their network file servers and email folders for storing corporate data. And Content Management systems in place today still tend to focus on management of traditional documents like images, drawings, forms, files and videos.  Newer online content sources are making management of data all the more challenging. The EMA report notes that the volume of online content is surpassing traditional content.  FAXes, for example, are dropping in favor of emails and Instant Messaging.  EMA predicts that the level of corporate blogging will more than triple over the next year. All of this online content, whether it be blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS, email, or IM is flowing within and outside of enterprises today.  And consider yesterday’s blog entry about Enterprise Mashups — how can dynamic content created from mashups using composite services be best captured, stored and archived.  The challenge going forward will be to aggregate and search over these newer online types of content.last_img read more

MARCA poll: Cristiano is best overseas sports star of 2013

first_imgRabat- A poll conducted by the Spanish leading sports newspaper has voted Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo as the best overseas sports star of 2013.   24, 5 % of those participating in the poll voted in favor of Cristiano Ronaldo followed by the holder of Formula 1 title Sebastien Vettel (21%) and NBA star Lebron James (16%).                                            2013 had been outstanding for the Portuguese international whose decisive goals and assists helped his country to book a seat in Brazil’s 2014 World Cup with a play-off win against Sweden. Real Madrid’s number one might seal what has been the finest year of his professional career yet with a second Ballon d’Or on January 13th after he lifted his first prestigious trophy in 2008 during his heydays with Manchester United. The 28-year-old has scored 69 goals in 2013, more than his Ballon D’Or rival Leo Messi who scored a total of 45 goals over the same season. Ronaldo is currently La Liga’s top scorer so far with 18 goals in just 16 Liga appearances this season and he is well on course for a second consecutive Pichichi prize. The Madeira-born is the favorite star to win the Ballon d’Or ahead of the winner of the last four years editions Leo Messi whose injury left him behind in the race to win his fifth, and Bayern Munich’s Frank Ribery who, in spite of winning every trophy this season with the Bavarians, is still coming up short in terms of one-on-one stats against CR7.In the Women’s poll, it was the Tennis player Serena Williams who was nominated best overseas star of 2013. U.S swimmer Missy Franklin (11%) and Jamaican sprinter, Shelley-Ann Fraser- Pryce (9%) completed the poll’s top 3.© Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved.
